The Dail needed to be vacated for a short period this afternoon due to a bad smell that engulfed the chamber. At around 2:30 Ceann Comhairle Sean Barrett decided to suspend the chamber for one hour as a very strong bad smell had come across the Dail chamber.
Deputies left the chamber and Leinster House facility staff entered and examined the chamber and the ventilation system. No apparent reason for the smells was found. Some extra air fresheners were placed around the chamber and the smell seemed to lift. Deputies returned at around 3:45 and recommenced their business.
TDs and Dail staff could see the funny side of the evacuation but they did see the need to evacuate as the smell was quite bad at one stage. One deputy who off the record stated, “It was a bad smell… pretty much like a fart… a bad fart. It seemed to come from where Mick Wallace was sitting but I’m not saying anything…… but I’m pretty sure I saw him have the curry in the bar at lunch.”
