In a wide ranging interview with LaughingRobinHood.com Jack Charlton has confirmed that he supported England in the Easter Rising as it was the only choice he could logically have had at the time.
However the former Irish manager did say that Pearse and Connolly and the other 1916 leaders could have made a better fight of it if they had taken advantage of the granny rule. “There were loads of lads in the English army who could have fought for Ireland. If I was in charge I would have been on to the lads in the British Army who’s folks were from Ireland before I went into the GPO. They could have fought for the Eire and evened up the battle” stated the former world cup winner.
